Route: From St Davids to Milford Haven

Overview

The focal point in the "smallest city" in Britain is of course the Cathedral of St Davids.  The current structure dates from 1180 and is believed to be at least the 4th cathedral on this site, the earlier ones having been destroyed by marauding Vikings!

The journey commences, following the high dramatic cliff line around St Brides Bay, with views over the water to distant Ramsey Island, then rises amongst lush woodland, to the Gribin, where stands evidence of a 3000 year old Iron Age Fort, once guarding the entrance to the pretty village and harbour at Solva. From here the Path descends towards the impressive 2 1/2 miles of the storm formed sandy beach at Newgale, before rising past colliery remains of chimney stacks, shafts and foundations of engine sheds at Rickets Head. Passing the tranquil beauty of the coves at Broad Haven, Little Haven, St Brides and Marloes Sands, you will see some unusual geological features such as stunning cliffs layered with red sandstone and grey shale, followed by fantastic views towards the islands of Skomer and Skokholm, nestling in the Atlantic ocean and a haven for puffins, kittiwakes, guillemots, gannets and Manx shearwater.  Chough, storm petrel, peregrine, buzzard and wheatear also put in an appearance on the island and around St Ann's Head along with regular visits by porpoises and dolphins. Visit the village of Dale, once a bustling community with 18 pubs but now much smaller with much of the original village having been reclaimed by the sea, and nearby Dale Fort, in a spectacular location near the entrance to Milford.  Built in 1856, in an attempt to deter the forces of Napoleon III from invading the west coast of Britain, this impressive building is now an educational establishment for field studies.

Finally, arrive at the charming port of Milford Haven.  A port since the Middle Ages and once a busy whaling community, the docks have been reshaped into a superb 150-berth marina, with an impressive Dockside Gallery and Museum  and where there was once a commercial quayside there are now cafes, restaurants and smart shops for you to relax and explore.
